Mother killed, hurt infant driven away

LAHORE, Sept 16: A woman was run over and killed by a rashly-driven car while her 10-month-old daughter suffered injuries after she fell onto the windscreen in South Cantonment police precinct on Sunday.

As the infant got into the car through the broken windscreen, eyewitnesses said, the driver accelerated along with her. Whether the infant died or survived the accident could not be ascertained.

Reports said Gulzar, his wife Fatima and daughter Maafia (10 months old) — residents of Nishat Colony — were strolling towards their workplace when a speeding car (LEG-6494) hit Fatima.

Fatima fell on the road while Maafi sprang out of her lap and got into the car. The woman died on the spot while her daughter was driven away by the driver.

Edhi officials removed the body to the morgue. A South Cantonment police team reached the spot and later registered a case against the absconding driver on the complaint of Gulzar.

According to eyewitness Umair Hasnat, a resident of National Town, he was standing at the traffic signal of Khalid Butt Chowk early in the morning when he saw a speeding vehicle hitting a pedestrian woman after jumping the signal.

He said he saw the child in the woman’s lap falling on the windscreen and into the car whose driver sped away. He said it all happened in the wink of an eye and anyone who had witnessed the accident was shocked.

Police said they radioed a message on wireless to locate the vehicle, but could not find any clue to it till last reports came in. They, however, said they would be able to arrest the killer in a day or two.

In another accident, a 35-year-old motorcyclist was knocked down and killed by a speeding car while another injured in Iqbal Town on Sunday.

Police said Imran was going along with his friend Arshad by his motorbike and as they reached Bhekeywal Morr, a rashly-driven car hit them from behind.

Imran died on the spot while his friend suffered severe injuries and was taken to hospital where his condition was stated to be critical.

The driver took to the heels and the police impounded the car. —Staff Reporter
